FLUKE... is a purebred lab and this picture shows him on Death Row in Dundalk pound this week. We saved him literally just a few minutes before he was due to be put to sleep.
Fluke (a name we’ve given him) was surrendered to the pound two days ago and as the pound was full he was in danger (surrenders can be put to sleep immediately). Not helping his case was that Fluke was so scared that the warden decided he was too nervous and should be destroyed.
I didn’t know any of this when I saw this picture. I was just drawn to him because there’s something about this dog’s expression, particularly the set of his ears, that really moved me. So we have offered to take him and we have to hope that we’re right and the warden is wrong. (It wouldn’t be the first time, am glad to say!)
Fluke is now out of the pound and so far so good - he was quite playful once he got in the fresh air and he shared a crate with a boxer x bitch with no fuss.
We’ve since learned that he’s from a very rough part of town and was kept in a back garden as guard dog. So poor Fluke has had very little love and attention. But we think he deserves a chance and we have every hope that with love and kindness he will transform into a very special boy.
UPDATE 14/10/08
Well like all the other dogs in Dundalk pound, Fluke’s travel to the UK has been delayed due to kennel cough, but he is now better and will be arriving next week, on the 24th.
The great news is that Fluke has really come out of his shell and is proving to be a really lovely boy - still shy, but sweet and friendly and great with other dogs. Can’t tell much about him from the new pic, but he does indeed look purebred and only a youngster. He has now been neutered.
We’re really glad to have saved this boy and can’t wait to find him a loving new home.
If you are interested in Fluke either as a foster or a forever home, please email info@blackretrieverx.co.uk asap.
There will be an adoption fee of £125 for Fluke, which includes the £65 it costs to transport him from Ireland.
