PEARL... is a small GSD/collie  x girl, about 18 months old. She’s not our usual fare, but we offered to take her because we were so touched by Pearl’s story and believe we can find a family that will be perfect for her.

Pear was dumped into an Irish pound in March with her three pups - absolutely terrified and distraught when the pound took the pups from her and put them into a separate kennel. Poor Pearl could hear and smell them but couldn’t get to her babies.

An angel in the shape of Gill from Celtic Animal Lifeline took both Pearl and her pups as soon as their five days were up. The pups were ill, but Gill and Pearl nursed them back to health and they went off to lovely new homes last month (see pix below).

Pearl has settled wonderfully with Gill. She’s a very sweet, affectionate girl who is active, playful and gets on very well with other dogs, to whom she will always defer (Pearl is a follower not a leader).  She absolutely adores water and Gill’s water-feature is a big favourite, as you can see!

Pearl is, however, terrified of men. It has taken two months for Pearl to accept being stroked by Gill’s son, who is a lovely gentle lad. Her whole demeanour when a man is around is one of a dog who is waiting to be beaten to within an inch of her life - which is what must have happened to this poor girlie.

Other than this (and of course it is quite a big “this”), Peal is a gem. She is housetrained, obedient, very bright  and a very quick learner.

Pearl needs a kind, patient, experienced home with an existing dog to help show her the ropes - ideally a playful, confident, gentle male. We also need a two-legged male of the same variety!  Any man who Pearl lives with will need to accept being looked at as if they’re an axe murderer - at least for a while - and will need to give her the distance and time she needs. A location where she does not have to cope with a lot of men out on walks, etc, would be great too.  And, hey, if you happen to have a water feature....

Pearl is neutered, fully vaccinated, wormed, flea-treated and microchipped.

UPDATE 20/6/10

Lovely Gill from Celtic Animal Lifeline, who rescued Pearl earlier this year, has decided to keep Pearl herself, feeling it would be too unfair to move her now she has settled so well with her.  And it has worked out well for us as the home we thought would be right for Pearl has taken Libby, who was also in need of a kind, gentle, calm home with an older dog to help build confidence and trust.
